The De-cluttering Process

Whether you are moving or staying in your existing home, the elimination of clutter and unwanted belongs is always a positive step, but it is often the most difficult task our clients face. We offer sensitive, caring and creative solutions to letting go issues. Whether treasure or heirloom, priceless artifact, or a trinket that holds meaning—we will carefully guide you through a proven decision-making process to reduce clutter and simplify your life.

You are always in complete control

Graceful Transitions does not just come into your home and begin getting rid of your possessions. Our downsizing projects are scheduled and conducted in a manner to provide us adequate time to carefully learn about your “needs” and “wants” as well as your priorities. We work for you and assist you in sorting through possessions.

One of our first tasks when encountering a new client is to establish benchmarks by which to define need, want and value. These terms are always relative. We take time to listen and understand. By the time we are ready to begin the actual process, we have usually reached an acceptable level of comfort allowing us to both work efficiently and carefully communicate with you about your possessions.

The Decision Making Processs

This is a simplified but essentially accurate diagram of the decision making logic used to determine the ultimate destination of possessions in a downsizing project.
The decision making process employed to eliminate clutter, unnecessary and unwanted items is really nothing more than applied common sense. The diagram above, taken from our Enough Stuff presentation — is designed to aid our clients thinking about their possessions in preparation for a downsizing or clutter removal project. It can also be a useful tool to start the conversation about de-cluttering or downsizing. Try it yourself. Look around the room right now. Choose an object and apply the above logic. Where does it end up?
